2027 Call for Proposals for Indigenous Community Media

The Indigenous Community Media Fund (ICMF) is part of Cultural Survival’s Community Media Program. This fund was created to support initiatives by Indigenous organizations, collectives, and media outlets that contribute to strengthening their right to freedom of expression and access to information. Through these initiatives, we promote community awareness and organization around their worldviews, the defense of their rights, and their relationship with their territories.

Who is eligible?

• Indigenous community radio stations
• Networks of Indigenous community radio stations or media
• Networks or collectives of Indigenous communicators
• Networks or collectives of Indigenous women communicators
•  Networks or collectives of young communicators and Indigenous 2SLGBTQ+ community members
• Collectives of Indigenous muralists and photographers
• Other media outlets managed by Indigenous peoples: print media, community television, audiovisual and multimedia production, social media, intranet, and community internet.

 
Which regions and countries are eligible?

• Africa: Botswana, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda
• Asia: Philippines, Indonesia, Nepal
• Central America, South America: Argentina, Bolivia, Belize, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Paraguay, and Peru.
• North America: Canada, the United States, and Mexico

How to apply?

Proposals must be submitted through Cultural Survival’s application platform. Interested organizations, collectives, and groups must create an account (or log in if they already have one), complete the form for the 2027 Call for Proposals – Indigenous Community Media, and submit their application by the deadline: August 9, 2026.

What types of initiatives are eligible?

Cultural Survival’s Indigenous Community Media Fund will prioritize, though not exclusively, Indigenous communication initiatives that contribute to environmental justice and the response to climate change. Additionally, proposals led by women, youth, and members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community will be given special consideration.

The following eligible initiatives are presented as guidelines and examples of approaches that can strengthen proposals:

1. Access to and advocacy for Indigenous media

2. Strengthening Indigenous media and technological infrastructure

3. Capacity building in communication and digital technologies

4. Content production and dissemination

5. Exchange of experiences and strengthening of networks

Projects will be evaluated based on their relevance to addressing the needs and priorities of Indigenous peoples and territories, their organization and feasibility, Indigenous leadership, the participation of women, youth, and 2SLGBTQ+ Indigenous people, and their contribution to strengthening media, languages, knowledge, and Indigenous forms of communication.

• Call for Applications Deadline  August 9, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. (EST)
• Interviews with shortlisted candidates  November 2026
• Notification of selected candidates Starting December 15, 2026
• Award phase   January and February 2027
• Project implementation   March through October 2027
