WEST AFRICA: Ban on bush meat threatening native food supply

Though environmentalists fear the extinction of many species hunted by native West African peoples today, including the Great Ape, members of the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) recently denounced a proposed ban on bush meat at the British Association’s annual science festival. ZSL is suggesting an act that would “curb the trade’s excesses but still allow local people to exploit a valuable resource sustainably,” remarking that those who rely on the wild animal meat market are some of the poorest in the world.
