On August 16, nine Montagnards who had been involved in protests in April were imprisioned in Vietnam with terms ranging from five to 12 years. The rally, which occurred on April 10 and 11, called for an end to religious persecution and land confiscation for the Montagnards. The Vietnamese police and pro-government groups used force to break up the demonstrators. The Daklak People's Court convicted the members of "causing public disorder and sabotaging national unity," according to the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organisation. The ruling followed a two-day trial.
