UNITED STATES: Tribe wary of proposed Everglades conservation law

The Miccosukee Tribe and several environmental groups filed petitions last week with the Division of Administration Hearings in Tallahassee seeking to block a proposed law limiting phosphorous levels in Florida’s Everglades. The concerned groups are pleased with the stringent phosphorous limits included in the law but are suspicious of loopholes regarding the specific locations in which phosphorous will be measured. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency previously expressed similar concerns and suggested an amendment that was rejected by Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection.
