UNITED STATES: Tribal Law incorporates Navajo traditions

In Window Rock Arizona, the Navajo Nation Council this week passed a resolution that will ensure the integration of Dineh philosophy into the tribal government. The resolution addresses the acceptance of traditional values and customs into the Navajo legal code. Council Speaker Edward Begay stated, “The legislation is very simple; it codifies in our code-books who we are as Din. It signifies the value of Din philosophy and gives it equal, if not more weight, than western or European philosophy.” The Navajo Common Law research project consulted everyone from traditional Navajo to college faculty to the tribal president in an effort to construct educational opportunities to improve the tribal government.
