UNITED STATES: Tribal funding contested by California candidates

As California’s native tribes generate $5 billion per year through their gaming operations, gubernatorial candidates are working to gain the powerful California Nations Indian Gaming Association as an ally. Gov. Davis and two of the candidates aiming to replace him, Lt. Gov. Bustamante and Sen. McClintock, meet with the tribes today to offer their campaign proposals in hopes of getting funding. Rival candidate Arnold Schwarzenegger has refused this tactic, claiming that he will not take money from special groups with whom he would have to negotiate when in office.
