UNITED STATES: Peabody Coal public comment period ends September 15

The United States Office of Surface Mining (OSM) has extended the public comment period regarding the mining and reclamation plan for Peabody Western Coal Company’s Black Mesa-Kayenta Mines to September 15. Once the public comment period has closed, OSM is scheduled to finalize the plan. Included in the plan are proposals for an additional 20,157 acres of land for the Kayenta mine, additional acreage for the transportation of coal to the Black Mesa mine, and a 20-year extension on the mines’ operations. Production increases, along with heightened environmental monitoring, are also included.
