In an editorial this week, the Lincoln Journal Star announced that it would no longer use the nickname “Redskins” when reporting on Washington, D.C.’s professional football team. It has also renounced the publication of offensive team logos, such as the Cleveland Indians’ “Chief Wahoo”, that caricature Native cultures, and will no longer use the adjective “Fighting” in reporting on teams such as Illinois’ “Fighting Illini”. The newspaper’s editor, Kathleen Rutledge, cited the influence of the Native American Journalists Association’s call last year for media organizations to stop using logos and mascots that depict Native Americans in the paper’s decision.
