UNITED STATES: Celebrated American Indian writer dies at age 64

Renowned American Indian author James Welch died of a heart attack at his home in Missoula, Montana on August 4 after battling lung cancer for almost a year. Welch broke into the literary scene in 1974 with his first novel, Winter in the Blood, which received wide praise and a front page review in the New York Times. He would later go on to write six more books, continually redefining American Indian literature.
