UNITED STATES: Animal rights groups criticize Suicide Race

Washington State’s Suicide Race, the most popular and dangerous annual Indian horse race in the Northwest, took place last week despite harsh criticism from animal rights groups. The groups claim that the race is cruel to the horses, fifteen of which were killed in the past twenty years, but participants argue that the horses enjoy the race as much as the riders. The race has become an important coming of age event for area tribes.
