UGANDA: Wealthy Karimojong farm-owner offers land to pastoralists

Cornelius Kodet, a wealthy Karimojong land-owner, this week offered the use of his 500,000-acre farm for the resettlement of Banyankole, Banyarwanda and Sabiny pastoralists from western Uganda. The pastoralists are currently living and grazing their cattle in the wetlands of Teso. Last week they were given a six-month deadline to leave the area by national political commissar Dr. Crispus Kiyonga, after loud objections to their presence were voiced by local Teso leaders. Kodet is the owner of Mt. Moroto Hotel and a number of other businesses. His farm is in the Nakapiripirit district, and he claims it could hold 10,000 head of cattle. His brother, rare stones dealer Edward Athiyo, has also offered the use of his land should the need arise. Kodet said his gesture was made “in appreciation and solidarity with President Yoweri Museveni's efforts to bring peace and unity to Uganda."
