Uganda : Karimojong Rituals Postponed by Drought

Karimojong pastoralists of northeastern Uganda have been unable to conduct initiation rites for the past three years due to inadequate rainfall in the region, resulting in poor sorghum harvests. The rituals, which mark Karimojong youths’ passage into adulthood, are normally accompanied by large banquets featuring sorghum products, which are an important supplement to their staple beef and dairy diet.
