Uganda: Karamojong Cattle Disputes Spark Confrontations with Army

Following a Jie raid of Bokora cattle on May 23, the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces came to the aid of the Bokora, recovering some cattle but in the process killing and wounding many Jie warriors, according to press reports. Jie representatives in Parliament last week denied that there were clashes between Jie Karamojong warriors and government forces, but army chief James Nakibus Lakara’s recent orders to the UPDF to shoot dead any Karamojong fighters who fire at soldiers suggest there is a measure of truth to the reports. The government has also forbidden Karamojong men to wear khangas, traditional loincloths which officials allege are being used to conceal firearms. The Jie are one of the five pastoralist Karamojong ethnic groups of northeastern Uganda.
