TURKEY: Language suppression in Kurdish schools

The director of education in the Kurdish city of Kirkuk, southeastern Turkey, has proclaimed that only Arabic may be spoken in schools throughout the region. Despite the fact that the majority of students in Kirkuk schools speak only their mother tongues -- Kurdish or Turkman -- the director warned that any teachers found to be communicating with students in these languages, whether inside or outside the classroom, will be “investigated and punished.”
