Turkish authorities banned celebrations of the Kurdish New Year in cities throughout the country, claiming that “outlawed groups” would take advantage of the festivities to push their separatist agendas. The ban provoked thousands of Kurdish students into the streets in protest, during which two were killed and at least 200 arrested.
