TURKEY: Government spends millions to settle nomads

Chairman of the Turkish Agricultural Development Cooperative is requesting TL 1.5 trillion from the government to facilitate village construction for thousands of semi-nomadic families in southwestern Turkey. Already 350 families from the Beritan tribe have been settled with governmental support, and 666 more are expected to be settled soon. Other groups affected by the settlement programs are the Soran, Mehmediyan, Butayan, Jirkan, Dideran, Sipertiyan, and Tayyan traibes.
