TIBET: Longest serving political prisoner released

Phuntsog Nyidrol, the longest serving Tibetan female political prisoner, was released from Drapchi Prison on Tuesday. Nyidrol was incarcerated in 1989 after a peaceful demonstration celebrating the Dalai Lama’s receipt of the Nobel Peace Prize. Kalon Thubten Lungrig, the Kalon for the Departments of Religion and Culture and Education of the Central Tibetan Administration, hopes this is a precursor of “China’s willingness to change its policy on Tibet.”
