Five Tibetan monks were detained at Drepung Monastery in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa about two weeks ago, according to Tibetan sources. Three of the monks were taken into custody for listening to pro-independence cassettes, while the other two were detained for attempting to raise the Tibetan flag last year. Local police officials denied any knowledge of the detentions, which came shortly before the arrival of a special visit by foreign reporters.
