THAILAND: Hmong face planting troubles in forest reserve

Hmong tribespeople and lowlanders stand accused of clearing large amounts of land in the Chong Khaeb forest reserve. The Hmong want to use the land to cultivate cash crops such as rice, corn, cabbage, and other vegetables. The government, however, claims that the forests provide watersheds for important rivers in the area. Indigenous farmers now face forestry officials and border patrols sent to regain control of the forest reserve.
