The Prime Minister announced a country wide crackdown to eliminate all drugs to honor the Thai King's 75th birthday. In the first wave of violence to eliminate drugs, approximately 3,000 people were killed.
In Pah Nmm village of Mae Faluang district in Chiang Rai, Cultural Survival's source reports that an Akha man was dragged from his house for lack of identification and suspicion of ownership of drug paraphernalia. The man was taken to the district leader’s office (Pah Luang), tied and beaten repeatedly in the stomach and head in front of his wife and local villagers. The man was later released by the Army for lack of evidence.
