American Akha activist Matthew McDaniel was arrested at the Maisai Immigration Checkpoint while attempting to deliver vitamins to an Akha person in Burma. The Akha Heritage Foundation reports that his custody is a result of his long-established history of reporting human rights violations committed against hill-tribe people, especially the Akha, by the Thai authorities. McDaniel is currently being held at the Suan Phlu Immigration Detention Center while awaiting deportation.
