The Manegin clan has made the first native title claim in Tasmania. This land claim includes Sundown Point, located in the northwest of Tasmania, and has local residents nervous about its potential implications. The Circular Head Council claims that locals are confused because they do not understand the difference between a native title and a transfer of land. Aboriginal elder Lance Lesage says the title claim will not prevent the public from accessing and using the area. Discussions are being planned to clear up the local community’s doubts regarding the claim.
