SUDAN: Food shortages plague southern and western Sudan

Three straight years of bad droughts have led humanitarian aid officials in Sudan to anticipate major food shortages in the western province of Darfur, the central province of Kordofan, Bahr el-Ghazal in the south and the eastern Red Sea State. The ongoing civil war continues to hamper efforts to distribute food aid and identify those in need. The rebel Sudan People's Liberation Army has accused the government of hiding the plight of those in northeastern Sudan, where drought has also afflicted the population. SPLA teams are currently surveying the food needs of those in the southern sector of their territory, such as the Nuba Mountains, where aid shipments have been delayed repeatedly in the past.
