The Sudanese Foreign Ministry reported last week that 63 Sudanese herders were killed in clashes with local inhabitants across the border of the Central African Republic. The border region is occupied by thousands of refugees from Sudan’s 20-year civil war with separatist rebels in the southern part of the country. Tensions between Central African villagers and Sudanese refugees have been high in recent months; military officials report that as many as 100 people may have died in an incident near the border on May 9.
