SPAIN: U.S. places Basque political party on ‘terror list’

The United States has placed Batasuna, the Basque political party banned earlier this year in Spain, on its list of terrorist organizations. Secretary of State Colin Powell, under pressure from the Spanish government to add the group, signed the order on April 30. The designation means that Batasuna funds in the U.S. will be frozen, all donations to the group will be prohibited, and members will not be able to obtain U.S. visas. Batasuna has denied charges that it is the political wing of the armed separatist group ETA. Two other Basque nationalist groups – Euskal Herritarrok and Herri Batasuna – were also added to the list.
