Eight members of Udalbiltza, an association of Spanish and French municipalities in the Basque country, have been arrested as part of the government’s continuing crackdown on Basque political groups. The eight individuals were accused of promoting candidates for regional elections, in defiance of the ban on Batasuna, the Basque political party. Officials claim that Udalbiltza was established by the ETA, the armed Basque separatist group.
