Last week the Basque regional government passed a resolution calling on the Spanish government to reinstate the Basque language newspaper Egunkaria, which was shut down in a raid two weeks ago. The proposal criticized the Spanish government’s adoption of measures perceived as threatening to institutions relating to the Basque language and culture, and for its curtailing the freedom of information and the press. The Parliament’s proposal described the closing of Egunkaria as “a political measure”.
