Sauk Language Department Update

Cultural Survival partners at the Sac and Fox Nation of Oklahoma are taking their master-apprentice team on an immersion field trip to the Inter-tribal Council of the Five Civilized Tribes’ 2nd Annual Language Summit to be held at Bacone College in Muskogee, OK, May 21-22.  Team members will have the chance to practice real-world conversations about their travel experiences and the conference presentations’ applicability to their own community-based language revitalization work.  Conference sessions will explore tribal-university partnerships, teaching Native languages in tribal childcare programs, youth perspectives on the language-learning process, creating digital stories, and much more.

Event registration is closed due to space limitations, but those interested in joining the conference email list for 2011 should contact Kathleen Coachman, Mvskoke Language Program Director at kcoachman@muscogeenation-nsn.gov.

The Sauk master-apprentice teams’ 20-hour weekly sessions and regular immersion field trips are improving the language fluency of 3 Sauk language apprentices with funding from the Administration for Native Americans’ Native Language Maintenance and Preservation grants program.  The apprentices are committed to working as future teachers in the community’s immersion preschool that has already been successfully piloted in Stroud, OK.

Other upcoming summer language conferences include: Dakota Iapi Ominiciye 2010  and Stabilizing Indigenous Languages.
