Ulu Baram Penan communities are up against both the Sarawak government and the Samling logging firm in a court battle over native land rights. The court process has already exposed Samling’s plans to provoke and exploit inter-tribal rivalries and to disrupt the hearing of the case. The Sarawak government has denied the Penan’s customary rights to their land, and Samling is pressing its own claims, based on the timber logging licenses issued to them by the Sarawak government.
