Some 750 Inuit from Arctic villages live in and around Montreal. Some are students, some long-term hospital patients. Others have come south to pursue career opportunities or to get away from social problems that affect many Arctic villages. About one hundred northern Quebecois, working with the Makivik Corporation, an Inuit political and economic development organization, have opened a center to restore a sense of community and strengthen Inuit identity in Montreal.
