PERU: Peruvian Truth Commission releases landmark report

A new report issued by the Peruvian Truth and Reconciliation Commission on August 28th states that over 69,000 people were murdered or disappeared between 1980 and 2000 as a result of political violence; it is believed that the majority of victims were from indigenous communities. While the report says that Peru’s infamous Maoist/terrorist group ‘Shinning Path’ is responsible for instigating the war, state police and army forces are also to blame for many atrocities that took place. The report, which took two years to compile, includes 17,000 testimonies from those who suffered violence, as well from rebel leaders currently in prison.
