PERU: Farmers revive “waru waru” system

Many Indian communities on the plains around Lake Titicaca have revitalized the ancient farming and irrigation system of waru waru to protect against flooding and droughts. Two decades ago anthropologists began reconstructing the waru waru irrigation system with indigenous communities and found that crop production tripled. The method fell out of use a millennium ago and although reemerging with success, some fear that without institutional or governmental support the system will once again be forgotten.
