PERU: Ecuadorian, Peruvian Achuar embark on partnership

Achuar communities from Ecuador and Peru are bringing together representatives to address common issues such as oil extraction, territorial demarcation, and the creation of a partnership that would link the scattered peoples together. The political voice of the Achuar in Peru has been limited because their population of 8,000 is widely spread through the Amazon, resulting in greater vulnerability to incursions by multi-national oil companies compared to the Ecuadorian Achuar. A partnership of the two groups across national borders should lead to greater acknowledgement and power for the Achuar people of both countries, and Peruvian Achuar communities will receive additional legal training and financial support to help them in their struggle.
