NUNAVIK: Self-government talks expected to continue despite change in government

The long-dominant Parti Québecois (PQ) has lost the recent election to the Parti Libéral du Québec, but Nunavik officials are confident self-government talks for the northern region of Québec will continue. Tensions between the separatist PQ and Nunavimmiut who overwhelmingly wish to remain a part of Canada made for a less-than-perfect relationship between the region and the provincial government, but they were able to establish much common ground nonetheless. Nunavik officials noted that they have been careful to keep the Liberal Party well-informed about the self-government talks even when the party was not in power, so there will be less confusion during the transition of power and ongoing negotiations.
