NUNAVIK: Self-government framework agreement stalled by election

Quebec’s upcoming provincial election has put the new framework agreement for a Nunavik government on hold. There is a possibility that if the current party, the PQ (Parti Québécois), is not re-elected, the talks will have to begin again from scratch. The agreement, negotiated by the Makivik Corporation on behalf of the “Nunavik Party”, a group of important local organizations, has met with controversy and mixed responses. The Kativik School Board, also a member of the Nunavik Party, has sued Makivik over its right to negotiate the agreement, and another member, the Kativik Regional Council, has yet to approve the agreement.
