A proposed fishing deal could bring much needed money to Niue’s economy. The proposed deal would give fishing licenses to the Apia Fish Packers in Samoa and to two New Zealand Fishing Companies, which could result in at least ten fishing boats in Niue’s waters. The licenses could potentially help Niue’s population problems as well as its fiscal ones. Niue’s population has decreased from 5,000 in 1966 to less than 1,500 today. A fishing boom, though, would increase the country’s economic activity and could attract more people to the area.
