NIGERIA: Shell oil spill damages Ogoni property

Farmland caught fire and streams were polluted when an oil pipeline ruptured on August 29 in Gio, a small Ogoni community. Shell met with community leaders to discuss sending a joint investigative team to research the cause of the rupture, but the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) noted that either pipe corrosion or illegal tapping of crude oil is the most probable cause. Community members are angered by such repeated incidents of environmental degradation.
