NIGERIA: Peace accord raises hopes for end of conflict in Ugborodo

Since 1997 internal conflict revolving around a leadership dispute and oil resources has plagued the Issekiri community of Ugborodo. But yesterday in Warri a peace accord was signed, and community members shared a meal to signify the end of hostilities. Signed by the Eghare-Aja of Ugborodo, Eghare Wellington Ojogor, and the Olaja-Orori of Ugborodo, the accord establishes a management committee that will be the administration for the community for two years. The Eghare-Aja indicated that this will be the sole contact point for all community affairs and added, “We specifically wish to inform the management of Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL), Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) and government at various levels that the executive of the management committee is the sole contact point . . . We do not want multiple representation by various groups as was the position in the last seven years.”
