NIGERIA: Ogoni group calls for engagement in electoral process, dismisses talk of boycott

The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) has confirmed its commitment to active participation in the electoral process, dismissing as mischief the recent circulation in Ogoni communities of a pamphlet calling for a boycott of this year’s polls. A MOSOP official stated, "We are committed to ensuring that Ogoni has better representation than it is in the current dispensation, and only an active involvement can secure this. This is why a boycott in our present circumstance does not make sense." The organization claims the pamphlet is the work of local politicians who feel threatened by MOSOP’s engagement in local politics, and its close scrutiny of under-qualified and corrupt candidates.
