NEW ZEALAND: Hapu seek to ban commercial fishing from traditional waters

Northland Ngati Te Ao and Tahawai hapu, both members of Te Rarawa, have imposed a rahui (ban) on commercial fishing on tribal coastline and waterways, and are calling for other coastal Hapu to do the same. The rahui does not prevent Pakehas (non-indigenous New Zealanders) from accessing the beach. The purpose of the ban is not to exclude, but to enable indigenous groups to manage their own resources.
