MOROCCO: Berber language to be taught in schools

Habib Al-Malki, Moroccan youth and education minister, announced last week that the three dialects of Berber (Tachlhit, Tamazight and Tarifit) would be taught in schools beginning in the upcoming school year. The hiring of 1,000 Berber teachers is the initiation of a plan to make available Berber as a general subject. The official stated that this was part of a gradual development to carry out a plan made between the Education Ministry and the Royal Institute of Amazigh Culture (IRCAM) in October 2001.
