August 9th marked the first of a three-day public event orchestrated by Zapatista rebels in the state of Chiapas. The event is yet another effort by the Zapatista army to step away from their military origins to a more public image. While Sub-Commander Marcos, leader of the Zapatista army, was not present at the event, other commanders, indigenous villagers and foreign supporters were among the participants.
