MEXICO: Mayan City on the World Heritage List

In June 27, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and CulturalOrganization's (UNESCO) World Heritage Committee added the Mayan city of Calakmul to the World Heritage List, which is composed of “730 cultural, natural and mixed sites of outstanding universal value”. The city of Calakmul (Campeche) situated in the tropical forests of Tierras Bajas, Southern Mexico, is an “exceptionally well-preserved Mayan city”. Calakmul and Tikal were two Mayan capitals for more than 12 centuries, and are important parts of the cultural heritage of the Mayan peoples who live in Mexico today.
