A series of retaliatory raids by Borana and Turkana herders have left several dead in both communities. Six people were killed this week and several more wounded in an attack on a Turkana manyatta (village) in the Isiolo region. Police officials characterized the incident as a cattle-rustling attempt, though local church officials saw it as an act of revenge for the killings of three Boranas in July. The violence forced 400 Turkana families and 200 Borana families to flee their homes and take refuge in schools and missions.
