KENYA: Tentative support for residents of Enoosupukia

After tribal elders from indigenous Ogiek and Maasai communities refused to vacate their ancestral land in Enoosupukia area this week, their case has won tentative support from the Catholic Church and Cabinet Minister William Ole Ntimama. Kenya’s Daily Nation quoted Ntimama as declaring, “The people in Enoosupukia are not squatters ... they are living on the land of their forefathers … It would be illegal to forcibly evict them." April 8 was the date set two weeks ago by Narok District Commissioner J. Kimiywi and Provincial Commissioner Peter Raburu for indigenous communities to be evacuated from the Enoosupukia area, due to its being governmental trust land and an important water catchment basin for the area.
