This week Kenyan officials addressed Maasai communities concerning the Children’s Bill, which stipulates that every child over the age of six must attend school. Reporting that only 25 percent of Maasai girls finish primary school, Speaker to the National Assembly Francis ole Kamparo stated that Maasai must discard cultural practices, such as early marriages, which contribute to this low rate of attendance. Assistant Minister for Education Orwa Ojode later added that Maasai chiefs and parents who do not comply with the Children’s Bill will be arrested and charged.
