KENYA: Katiba Watch Pushing for New Constitution

A new Kenyan constitution, which President Mwai Kibaki promised would be complete on June 30, has not been released to the public. Kibaki had been expected to enact the new constitution 100 days after he became president in December 2002, but the process has been racked with delays. Kibaki recently demoted members of the Liberal Democratic Party who had been lobbying for a new constitution and replaced them with members of the former ruling Kanu party. Kenyans showed their disapproval by protesting in Kisumu, where one was shot dead and at least 10 injured after Kenyan police fired at the demonstrators. In response, the lobby group Katiba Watch has been created to push for the implementation of the new constitution, which people believe will promote the rights of indigenous peoples throughout the country, reduce the president’s powers, and create an executive prime minister office.
