A new report released on September 28 by Human Rights Watch reveals ongoing torture by Indonesian soldiers of detained members of the Free Acheh Movement, also known as the Acheh Sumatra National Liberation Front (ASNLF). The report, based on interviews with prisoners in central Indonesia documents ongoing abuse to Acheh sympathizers in the form of electric shocks, beatings and cigarette burnings behind bars. The ASNLF dismiss cultural, political and historical affiliations with Java and Jakarta. As a result, they have been labeled as "separatists" despite their claims that they are open to outsiders, as long as they obtain self-determination.
