The European Parliament has adopted a text regarding the situation in the Aceh region of Indonesia. It begins with acknowledgement and support of the importance of Indonesian territorial integrity. But it further states that the only way for the Indonesia government to guarantee that integrity is to engage in talks with the Acehnese separatists of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM). The text offers a pointed reminder that President Megawati Sukarnoputri promised upon taking office to solve the Aceh problem peacefully.The Parliament further calls on the leaders of GAM to return to negotiations with the Indonesian government, for GAM to gain its freedom through a democratic process, and for the Indonesian military to pull out of the area.
