Indonesia Campaign: Sample Letter

Indigenous and environmental organizations in Indonesia ask us to send polite letters to government officials. Please use this Indonesian heading:

Mohon Tambang di NTT Dihentikan. Hak Masyarakat Setempat Perlu Dihormati
(
Halt mining in East Nusa Tenggara. Respect rights of indigenous communities)

Ask them to:

  • Halt mining operations in East Nusa Tenggara province that are opposed by the affected Indigenous communities and are causing irreparable harm to the environment, with special attention to the manganese mines at Torong Besi and Kampung Sirise;
  • undertake a comprehensive process of consultation with mine-affected communities in East Nusa Tenggara, respecting the human rights of the Indigenous Peoples and requiring their consent for mining projects that would affect them;
  • commit resources to explore alternative economic development paths with Indigenous communities that are environmentally sustainable and culturally appropriate.
